Gold shops in Phuket: how buying works
Thailand's traditional gold shops work differently from a Western jeweller. Gold is a near-pure 96.5%, it is priced by weight against a rate that moves through the day, and the shop will usually buy it back. Once you know the units and where the making charge sits, the pricing is transparent and hard to inflate — which is why gold is one of the more straightforward things to buy here. This page covers purity, pricing, buy-back, where the shops are, and how VAT applies. We run a free transfer to a showroom, so this is background, not a sales pitch: you never have to buy anything.
The short version
A gold shop sells 96.5% gold by weight in the baht unit (about 15.24 g), priced off the day's published rate plus a making charge for the workmanship. It weighs the piece in front of you, prints a receipt with the weight, and will buy the gold back later at the day's buy rate — minus that making charge.
Because the metal value is public and the piece is weighed on the spot, there is little room to overcharge on the gold itself. The variable is the making charge and, for ornate pieces, the design premium. Malls and established chains post fixed prices; small independents may move a little on the making charge.
Thai gold vs the gold you know
Thai jewellery gold is 96.5% pure — 23 karat, against the 18k (75%) or 14k (58.5%) that is standard in Europe and North America. The higher content gives Thai gold its deep yellow colour and makes it softer, so intricate settings and gem-set pieces are often made in 18k instead. Investment bars come in 96.5% or 99.99%. If you plan to wear a ring hard every day, a lower karat is more durable; if you are buying gold partly as a store of value, 96.5% keeps more of your money in metal.
How gold is priced here
Two numbers do the work. First, the gold weight, quoted in baht — a mass unit, not the currency — where 1 baht of gold ≈ 15.24 g, and shops also deal in half- and quarter-baht and in grams. Second, the daily rate: the Gold Traders Association publishes a buy price and a sell price for 96.5% gold and updates them through the trading day as the world market moves. Every reputable shop works from the same rate.
On top of the metal value, an ornament carries a making charge (ค่ากำเหน็จ) for the craftsmanship — small and roughly fixed on a plain chain, larger on a detailed or hand-made piece. So the tag price is: (weight in baht × today's sell rate) + making charge. Ask the shop to break those two out for you; a shop that will not is unusual.
Buy-back and pawn
The same shops buy 96.5% gold back, usually at that day's buy rate for the weight — you do not recover the making charge, and the figure changes daily with the market. Gold shops also run a pawn service (short-term loans against gold), which is why you will see gold and "รับจำนำ" signage together. For a visitor, the practical point is that a Thai gold chain is fairly liquid: it can be sold back at most gold shops in the country, not only the one you bought from, as long as you keep the receipt.
Where to find gold shops in Phuket
Every town centre has a cluster of them. In Phuket Town, the streets around the fresh market and Ranong Road; in Patong, along Rat-U-Thit Road and inside Jungceylon; and in Chalong, Kathu and Thalang near each town's market. Central Phuket has gold counters from national chains alongside its jewellery shops. Independent family shops and the national chains price off the same daily rate; the chains just make the buy-back and any dispute more standardised.

- Confirm the purity stamp (96.5%, or the karat if it is Western gold)
- Keep the receipt — you need it for buy-back and for the VAT refund form
- Pay by card where you can; some shops add a card surcharge, so ask first
- For a gem-set gold piece, the stone is priced separately — treat that part like any gemstone purchase
VAT and the tourist refund on gold
For 96.5% gold, Thai VAT is charged on the shop's margin and making charge, not on the gold weight, so the refundable amount on a gold ornament is modest. Investment-grade gold bars are VAT-exempt altogether. If you do want to claim, the normal rules apply: buy from a shop showing the "VAT Refund for Tourists" sign, get the P.P.10 form with the tax invoice, and process it at the airport — Customs before check-in, refund counter after immigration. The step-by-step is in the buyer's guide.

Traditional Thai gold jewellery is 96.5% pure (23 karat), higher than the 18k (75%) or 14k (58.5%) common in Europe and North America. Investment bars are usually 96.5% or 99.99%. The higher gold content makes Thai gold a deeper yellow and softer, and means most of the price is the metal itself.
By weight, in the traditional baht unit (1 baht of gold is about 15.24 grams), against the buy and sell rate the Gold Traders Association publishes and updates through the day. An ornament adds a making charge (ค่ากำเหน็จ) on top of the metal value; a plain chain has a small one, an elaborate piece more. The shop shows you the day's rate and weighs the piece in front of you.
Yes. Buying back 96.5% gold is standard — you get roughly the day's buy rate for the weight, without the making charge you originally paid. Keep the shop's receipt and any certificate. Rates track the market, so the amount changes daily.
Only a little. For 96.5% gold, Thai VAT is charged on the shop's margin and making charge, not on the gold weight, so the refundable amount on an ornament is small. Investment-grade gold bars are VAT-exempt entirely. The scheme still needs the shop's "VAT Refund for Tourists" paperwork and airport processing.
