Jewelry shopping in Phuket: where to go
Phuket is a retail and trading stop, not a mining area — Thailand's gems come out of the ground elsewhere and are cut, traded and heat-treated in Chanthaburi and Bangkok, then sold on across the country. What the island gives you is choice: mall counters with fixed prices, traditional gold shops, artisan boutiques in the Old Town, weekend markets, and a handful of large standalone showrooms. The short version
If you want a fixed price and no negotiation, shop the jewellery counters and gold shops inside Central Phuket or Jungceylon. If you want coloured gemstones or a larger custom piece and are willing to compare, the established standalone showrooms near Phuket Town hold the widest stock. For character pieces, silver and local makers, walk Phuket Old Town and the weekend markets. For gold by weight, any traditional gold shop in a town centre.
Wherever you go, the checks are the same everywhere: buy from premises you can walk back into, get the stone's details and any treatment written on the receipt, ask for an independent certificate on anything expensive, pay by card where you can, and never let a taxi or tuk-tuk driver choose the shop for you. What Phuket is known for
Four things dominate the windows here. Diamonds are sold too, but they are not what the country trades in.
Coloured gemstones
Thailand is one of the world's main hubs for cutting, trading and heat-treating coloured stones, so the depth here is in sapphire, ruby, spinel and zircon rather than diamond. Pearls
The Andaman Sea has working pearl farms, and Phuket shops sell local cultured pearls alongside imported South Sea and Tahitian pearls. Quality is judged on lustre, surface, shape and size — see the pearl shopping guide.
Thai gold
Traditional gold shops sell 96.5% "Thai gold" by weight (in baht units, 1 baht ≈ 15.2 g), priced off the daily rate published by the Gold Traders Association plus a small making charge. The same shops usually buy gold back — details in how gold shops in Phuket work.
Silver

Where the shops are, area by area
Phuket Old Town
The Sino-Portuguese quarter around Thalang, Dibuk and Yaowarat roads. This is the place for independent jewellers, silversmiths and artisan pieces rather than big gem showrooms — smaller shops, one-off designs, some vintage. The Sunday Walking Street (Lard Yai) adds costume and handmade silver stalls in the evening. Many boutiques close on Mondays; go daytime midweek for the actual shops. Central Phuket (Floresta & Festival)
The island's main mall, on the bypass road just north of Phuket Town. The Festival wing has mid-range jewellery counters and gold shops; the Floresta wing carries international luxury houses. Patong — Jungceylon and the tourist strip
Jungceylon mall on Rat-U-Thit Road has gold shops and jewellery counters at fixed prices. The streets around Bangla Road, by contrast, have the highest concentration of tourist-facing jewellers on the island — and the highest opening prices, the hardest sell and the most reported pressure. Fine to browse; compare hard, and don't decide on the spot.
Boat Avenue & Laguna (Cherng Talay)
The upmarket Cherng Talay strip on the north-west coast — Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket — has a few design-led boutiques and resort jewellery among the restaurants and lifestyle shops. Small selection, higher price point, pleasant to walk.
The standalone showrooms (near Phuket Town & the bypass)
Several large purpose-built jewellery showrooms sit on the north-east side of the island, near Phuket Town and along the bypass road. These hold the widest gemstone stock and do custom work, which is why tour buses go there. Some are perfectly legitimate; the thing to avoid is being routed to one on a commission trip by a driver. Choose the showroom yourself, arrive independently, and you keep the upper hand.

Which type of outlet suits you
- Standalone showroom — widest gemstone range, custom setting, certificates on request; best for a serious coloured-stone purchase, provided you chose it yourself.
- Mall counter — fixed price, brand-name pieces, easy returns; best if you want zero negotiation.
- Traditional gold shop — gold by weight at the daily rate, buy-back offered; best for chains, bangles and a store of value rather than design.
- Old Town boutique — one-off designs, silver, local makers; best for character over carat weight.
- Market stall — costume and hill-tribe silver, cash, hard bargaining expected; fun, low stakes, not for fine stones.
- Custom workshop — you bring a stone or a picture; allow several days and expect a deposit. Get the spec and delivery date in writing.
Bargaining, hours and paying
- Fixed vs negotiable — malls and gold shops are fixed; independent shops, showrooms and market stalls are negotiable, most of all on the Patong strip.
- Hours — malls and their showrooms run about 10:30–22:00 daily; traditional gold shops about 08:30–18:00; Old Town boutiques vary and often close Mondays; the Sunday Walking Street and Naka Market are evening only.
- Payment — cards are widely taken in malls and showrooms; a card surcharge of around 3% is sometimes added, so ask. Markets are cash.
- Passport — you don't need to hand it over to shop; a copy is enough for the tax-refund form.
- Get it in writing — stone weight, type and treatment, setting metal, and any return window with a date.
The tourist VAT refund
Non-resident visitors can reclaim the 7% VAT on a qualifying purchase: buy from a shop showing the "VAT Refund for Tourists" sign, spend at least 2,000 THB in that shop on the day and 5,000 THB in total, take the P.P.10 form and tax invoice, and process it at the airport — Customs inspection before check-in, refund counter after immigration, minus a fee.
